The best foam for sofa cushions is a replacement core where you get to choose the quality and firmness that you desire. The foam used in your cushions is one of the most important factors in determining the comfort and lifespan of your sofa. The lifespan of a foam cushion is primarily dependent on the quality of the foam. A foam’s weight (density) determines its quality not the firmness. Each foam has a weight to it, and typically, the heavier the weight the better. Furthermore, in each density range you can choose a firmness that is best suited for your weight, preference and budget.
The Best Quality Option – Premium High Resiliency (HR) Foam
Premium HR Foam (weighing at 2.6-2.7 lbs. per cubic ft.) is the best foam to use for sofa cushions and it is Made in Canada. HR foam is heavier which means it will maintain it’s thickness and firmness much longer than conventional polyurethane grades that tend to sag and soften much quicker. High Resiliency foam has been used in many high end commercial and residential applications. The Premium HR Foam can be used for high quality sofa backs and seats. They can also be used for longer-lasting toppers, for added comfort, and as a mattress foam for a better quality sleep.
High-resiliency foam has been used in many high-end commercial and residential applications. Our Premium foams are one of the heaviest foams available within the foam market.
This durable material is quite responsive, and will quickly return to its original shape after compression. This property has been the reason it is so popular within the higher-end and commercial industries. With an open-cell structure, High Resiliency foam is very springy but still offers sturdy support and better air circulation. It will last between 12 to 15 years, and provide you with deep-down support and that initial feeling of comfort.
The Next Best Quality Option – Curon High Density (HD) Foam
Curon HD Foam (weighing 2.1 lbs. per cubic ft.) is a very good foam for replacement sofa cushions. Considering that most furniture manufacturers use a 1.8 lb. density and lower for their foam cushions, this is a very good option. Curon is commonly preferred and recommended by the Upholstery trade. They call it the best but we, and now you, know better. Curon has been around for close to fifty years and is well known for its performance and comfort compared to other polyurethane foams.
Similar to Premium HR Foam, Curon HD has a quick return action. That means it will return to its original shape quickly after compression. Ideally, it could be used for various sleeping and sitting purposes, it is also able to support various everyday applications. Curon HD foam is a great choice for its quality-to-price ratio, lasting for approximately 10 to 12 years before sagging.
The Good Quality Option – 1.8 lb. White Foam
Basic 1.5 lb. Foam is commonly used for backs, mattress toppers, and occasionally used mattresses in spare bedrooms or overnight kid’s camps. Considering that most spring mattress toppers are made with 1.0 lb. or 1.3 lb. low-density foam, it is somewhat of an upgrade to put a 1.5 lb. foam topper over a spring mattress that has lost its comfort layer. Think about it, 1.5 lb. foam is 50% heavier than 1.0 lb. foam. It will last longer and be more comfortable than the original topper. It will also cost less than buying a new mattress, just in case there’s a recession up ahead.
Even though it is not recommended some low-end furniture manufacturers are using 1.5 lb. for their seat cushions, although they would never admit it. This foam is meant for display furniture, decorative applications, lower budgets, and quick fixes. Over a short period of time, it will deteriorate and develop sink areas in applications that require support (i.e. sitting or sleeping). When it begins to sink, it will not return to its original form. This lightweight foam will only last between 2 to 3 years in a seat cushion.
