A lot of things have changed in Toronto over the years, but one thing that remained constant, for over 65 years, was where you could go to buy a good piece of foam for some comfort that was lacking in your sofa cushions or perhaps on top of your old spring mattress.
Foam Rubber Sales was established in 1954. They had 2 locations in Toronto, one on Yonge Street and another one, on the East end of Toronto, on the Danforth. In their shop window, they had a giant hand that was squeezing a very large piece of foam. Their slogan, which was hanging on the wall in an old picture frame was, “Foam Sweet Home!”.
Bill Collins, the original owner, always said that you can’t be comfortable at home unless you had a good piece of foam to sit or sleep on. I guess he was right because people kept coming for foam that was used in a number of different applications, beyong sitting or sleeping.
In 1990 FOAMITE, in Vaughan, started to supply Foam Rubber Sales with all their foam and mattress needs. When the original owner died, in 2002, FOAMITE bought the business and continued to supply Toronto with foam and custom foam mattresses that could not be found in your regular mattress stores.
In 2020, the store was forced to close due to COVID-19 and the lack of foot traffic. Now, after a short break, we have decided to continue the tradition that was started by Foam Rubber Sales and carried on by FOAMITE.
